3D Horror Homage - In your face 3D!

Updated: Jul 4, 2022

I've recently been working with indie filmmaker Phil West on his first 3D feature film: "Halloween Jack 3D".

Phil has shot the feature length film on a miniscule budget and managed to shoot some great looking 3D from what I've seen using an all-in-one TD10 Stereo 3D Camcorder from Sony.

The film which is a homage to 80's slasher flicks kicks off 10 years after the bloody murders by Halloween Jack at a holiday camp site, the three remaining survivors return to try and put their horrific past behind them... But Jack has other plans for them, in gut wrenching 3D!

As would be expected of this type of homage for the opening credits we've stuck to the 80's template of ultra-extruded 3D text coming out of the screen and right into your face. A heavy debt is no doubt due to Friday 13th 3D!

Creating this effect in After Effects is theoretically straight forward until you consider that extrusion extends into the screen so animating the extrusion natively in After Effects, with the C4D 3D render option, means that the text starts at the front and then when the depth is animated the extrusion goes into the screen. It took a little bit of ingenuity and hokery pokery to get that to work the other way around.

Phil said "Andrew did amazing work on these titles - it's way better than I had expected and I think it is even better than the original titles that this is a homage to! Andrew has also helped along the way working out the best export settings for 3D bluray and other such deliverables, helping me with interlacing issues and frame rates... I could go on but as it's my first 3D feature Andrew has been key in helping me cross those barriers. I've learnt a lot filming in 3D & I look forward to making more 3D movies in the future."

"Halloween Jack 3D" will be available on 3D bluray and Streaming from September. More info can be found on Phil's website.
