VR Film Production Training for Medical Training in St Andrews

I recently spent a couple of days running a VR Filmmaking training session with a group from the Learning Technology Team The School of Medicine at The University of St Andrews.

The school has a cutting edge suite of VR tools ready to start developing immersive training content for the medical students, including a number of Meta Quest Pro headsets and an Insta360 Pro 2 camera which can shoot VR video at 8K in stereoscopic 3D.

It's a tough ask to learn just about everything you need to know to make 360 3D films in a couple of days but we worked through my now standard workshop process - taking VR films from script to screen in as efficient and creative manner as possible.

To help things along I also provided a newly created intro Adobe After Effects template that allows users to very quickly and with minimal AE knowledge swap out a logo, background image and title to create a slick looking intro/title sequence.

We also looked at the range of software required to create films from the initial scriptwriting and storyboarding, with the possible inclusion of interactive elements through to the likes of Insta360 Stitcher vs Mistika VR for stitching the stereoscopic 3D footage, Adobe Premiere Pro for titling and editing in 3D and object removal and stereoscopic conversion techniques using Adobe After Effects.

We rounded off by having a quick look at some of the basic to intermediate authoring tools for VR Tours as well as chatting about mixing films and interactivity using Unity and Unreal Engine.
